About a year ago I purchased a 5500, based on reviews online to the
effect that the metamerism seen in the 2000 had been greatly reduced to
almost the vanishing point. Hah! Another reason I felt comfortable in
buying the printer is that Epson's OSX page promised that drivers would
be available soon. Another Hah! The last time I checked that page,
drivers for the 5500 were promised for first quarter 2003. I guess
we'll have another Hah!, because when I spoke to an Epson rep at
MacWorld Expo a couple of weeks ago, he said it would be "sometime this
summer". I'm not holding my breath.
When I began using the printer, I found that I got horrendous results
with Epson's Archival Matte paper, although other papers worked fine. I
learned that there was a problem with the canned profile, decided to
get an i1 and Match so that I could get usable results on archival
matte from my $3500 "Pro" printer. I managed to profile the printer +
paper combination and now get good results, albeit with that metamerism
discussed above. So I've now spent approximately $7k on the
printer/spectro combination, have to boot into OS9 to print (classic
crashes as soon as I give the print command in OSX), and I'm feeling
burned by Epson.
