A good black indicator for me are the margins that surround the monitor's
active area. The left, top, and right sides are "gun" determined black,
and the bottom margin is an "absolute" black (I use the term loosely,
here). It is a simple job to arrive at a monitor brightness level where
there is the slightest discernible difference between these two blacks at
your usual ambient light level.
