In a message dated Wed, 09 Jul 2003, Gary Belt asked:
Could someone please define/explain what the attributes are to qualify a
paper as a proofing paper vs ink jet photo paper etc. I am in the
process of looking for alternative proofing papers for our Epson 7600.
Are all proofing papers for the ink jet market 7 plus mill in thickness.
1) An inkjet proofing media is a media that meets yours and your customers
needs - therefore any inkjet media could be considered a proofing media.
2) DuPont defines an inkjet proofing media on several characteristics:
a) achievable color gamut -bigger is always better
b) image quality - must be con-tone photo quality
c) opacity - want limited show through so color accuracy is highly
independent of what is underneath the proof. This generally leads to
slightly thicker or heavier media. DuPont's media start at 7.5
mils thick and go up to 10 mils.
d) lot to lot consistency - the substrate color and the color
response of the media must be the same or nearly the same every time it
comes off coater, or as it ages at the customer location.
e) color stability - after the proof is dry, the colors should not
shift over time
f) substrate color - color should either not require paper
simulation, or be "white enough" so that most paper colors can be
simulated.
3) Typically the photo market only cares about items a& b above, and
typically the substrate color is a very "cool" white. The cool whites tend
to be a bit too blue for the proofing market.
