First, let me thank all those of you who have so generously replied to my
post about fighting the D100 'smarts'.
Sorry if I haven't made myself completely clear the first time. But what I
am after, at this stage, is not so much how to save pixels but how (if
possible) to retain full control over the RAW CCD response. I understand the
differences in compression between capturing in TIFF, JPEG and RAW. But it's
what happens to the internal rendering inside the camera in RAW that
interests me.
For argument sake, let me open up a RAW NEF in Nikon Capture Editor v3.5.
Under the Tool Palette 2 I see 'Advanced RAW' and 'White Balance'. Let's
start with Advanced RAW. There I am presented with a choice of ColorModes as
follows:
A) Unchanged, b) Mode I, c) * Mode II, and d) Mode III.
The one with an asterisk on the left of its name is the one recorded with
the scene. (In the above this is 'Mode II') As can be seen, by default,
Unchanged is selected by Capture 3.5. Meaning that the D100 recorded 'Color
Mode II' is implicitely being applied here, until overriden by the user.
The fact is, there are no "5th" option in this drop down menu, one that
could be labeled 'No Color Mode' (as in Photoshop 'Untagged RGB'), leading
me to believe that, like or not, I'm still married to an implicit color
conversion from [something private to Nikon] to either Color Mode I, II or
III? Isn't there any option for 'no Conversion' at all? Like unadulterated
sheer RAW? (I guess one way to workaround this limitation is to
have a "null" RGB profile?)
This being said, AdobeCameraRAW gives the choice of one more Destination
profile but does not offer, like its Nikon sibling, a choice of completely
disabling RGB profile conversion from Nikon's internal representation. So,
either way I'm stuck...
Why bother, you say? Because I believe that profiling on top of an
already applied profile is not my idea of sound color management: no matter
which camera profiling software I apply.
Next, WhiteBalance. Again Nikon Capture v3.5 presents me with a
choice of [Recorded Value] and a bunch of others. But note the absence of
any type of [Disable Color Temperature already applied] option in this drop
down menu. Leading me to believe that there is no way to get at the true,
unprocessed RAW data.
In conclusion, yes, Nikon RAW NEF saves storage. It gives some flexibility
in working with scene data outside of the confine of the camera OS,
allowing reassigning WB and rendering the scene to a choice of color spaces
(how do you activate the other host of profiles that Nikon ships with
Capture?). But, in the final analysis, it does not afford any way to steal
the real RAW "CCD Dump" for camera profiling. Unless I missed something.
Maybe I ask for too much?
