Russell here. It's me who posted that info.
I've not found any problem with misregistration using a tripod. Why would
there be? Shooting with a laptop allows me to change the exposure without
touching the camera which probably helps. Merely touching the camera is
often enough to move it slightly unless it's REALLY locked down.
I adjust the separate files and (after adjusting and converting to 8bit)
past them into photoshop layers. I then mask each with a layer mask and
erase from the upper layers areas those that have better detail in the
lower layers.
An example of a good candidate for this technique would be a room interior
with lacy sunny backlit white window curtains and dark leather furnature.
The detail in a dark leather chair prefers one exposure, the general room
another and the lacy white curtains yet another exposure (to not be
completely blown out). You might even also want to include a hint of
outdoor detail that would require a fourth exposure.
If you composite these elements together well the effect is natural and
does not look like a composite. Yet, the only other way I could get a
similar result would be to add additional lighting (time+money) to the
interior to bring the illumination level up to a level where the curtains
and the dark leather could be captured with a single exposure.
