Device link profiles are essentially a legacy architecture from the
days before Apple ColorSync and the open standard Profile Connection
Space were introduced.
In a closed system the supplier would OEM monitors, proofers and
whatnot, and build paired conversions between these color spaces using
manual tweeks.
In a paired conversion the color space you are coming from sees the
color space you are going to and the color space you are going to sees
the color space you are coming from.
So the paired color spaces are Siamese twins, which has the
disadvantages explained in the iQueue manual e.g. that you can't embed
dLinks.
The ICC Specification states that dLinks are built from rendering
intents in two or more ICC profiles. The sequence of incoming and
outgoing spaces is up to your software, but the normal sequence is
incoming CMYK to outgoing CMYK.
There are several philosophies of how black is managed, CreoScitex
ProfileWizard has one aproach, and Monaco may have another. The ICC
Specification does not require black to be maintained, it is simply an
option that may be done in optional ways.
In other words you need to ask the manufacturer of your dLink building
software. As long as the dLink is as per the ICC Specification, it will
run in iQueue.
