Rich,
A lot of folks want to cut the corner on cost and try to roll their own rip/
printer solution, especially on this list. This is a reasonable goal, but
right now the fact of how rip and printer technology works seems to be
against that model.
A lot of rips have their own color controls that help with producing good
color fidelity. Some use profiles. Other rips use a mix of propriety and
profiles to get the color right, even if they say they are ICC compliant.
Right now we (me and a few associates) are looking at many rip products and
so far except for two, (that have been mentioned in this thread) a key
underlying issue is that the majority of rips require an expert to set the
color up. Enter profiles. Profiles can make the process easier at times.
It seems in theory and in at least two cases, if a rip is developed
correctly and it is supplied with good profiles for printers ( like and
Epson 7600) that have very little variation you can use profiles to optimize
the printed results. And it can be an easy process, except for forking over
the money for the products.
If you have a printer that drifts then you have to take the next step up and
learn profiling and deal with all the pain and suffering.
That9s just the way it works.
