Paul,
Yes, you're right if there is both 'ambient lighting' and also a
monitor-side dimmable booth but that is often not the case.
If someone does NOT have a dimmable D-50 viewing booth alongside the
monitor, but DOES want to make critical comparisons with a hard-copy
original or proof, then the ISO spec is no longer appropriate, in my view.
Here's where my suggestion would be appropriate, so long as your ambient
lighting was D-50 and positioned to not reflect directly off the screen.
