Can anyone tell me of the pros and cons of shooting Raw (16 bit) then
converting to a linear gamma of 1.0 before adjusting the data.
What benefits might I gain over the following workflow ?
Nikon D1X using cameras Adobe RGB 1998 profile setting. Profile left alone
once embedded.
Raw uncompressed Neff format.
Professional sports photographer working in the great outdoors and ever
changing colour temp variations..
Regularly update cameras pre set White balance and when luxury allows use
Kodak gery scale step wedge as reference point using lighter white patches at
190 - 195.
Use Minolta incident readings to peg highlights and then under expose by a
further 1/3 - 1/2 stop depending on subject conditions to further protect
highlights
as verified by Photoshop histogram.
Raw tonality consistently compressed and requires boosting curve between 1/4
and 3/4 points pegging 250 - 255 highlights in order they do not fly off the
scale
Digital darkroom system other than camera profiled accurately from monitor to
scanner to printer with Eye One Pro profiling kit. Get accurate workflow
However I am still uncertain regarding camera profiling accuracy and linear
technique and whether Adobes Camera Raw would negate the need for linear
techniques.
Colour management has been studied for approx 4 years but with regard to
camera profiling I am at the very bottom of what might be another steep
learning curve
