I agree with Joachim in that there is not that much difference between the
two for pre-press work.
1) As Joachim pointed out, the D65 reference white of Adobe RGB leaves the
door open just a crack for improper use of adaptation in a D50 environment,
although this is a very minor concern. Advantage: ECI RGB.
2) ECI RGB uses a gamma of 1.8, which is inferior to the 2.2 of Adobe RGB,
in my opinion. Advantage: Adobe RGB.
3) I compared the FOGRA Matte and Glossy IT8.7/3 measurement sets against
both of these working spaces and found that Adobe RGB does not quite contain
all of the cyans and yellows of the glossy set. ECI RGB does contain them
all, but just barely. Advantage: ECI RGB.
All of these issues are in the "hair splitting" category, so it probably
does not matter too much which is chosen.
As I have said before, choosing or designing the best working space is a
very complex topic. It involves many trade-offs, and how the various issues
are "traded" depends on what types of tasks you want the working space to
handle.
