The cookbooks advise that the choice of RGB working space depends on
the workflow. For inkjet poster and ISO offset glossy work, not all RGB
working spaces work equally well.
Moreover, offset glossy is not a static concept. Look in BASF PrintIt
magazine, no. 9, page 11, January 2003. Standard four ink process BASF
Novaspace is being tested with Agfa CristalRaster.
The concept of an RGB working space is tied to repurposing, and the
first instance of repurposing in any profile chain is the monitor.
As printing spaces increase in gamut, softproofing gamuts and
softproofing viewing conditions become ever more critical. Both are now
technology and product frontiers.
The days are long gone when CMYK was targetted for SWOP using
ColorMatch RGB as working space. Ink is not laid down in CMYK order,
SWOP is not the default printing condition, ColorMatch RGB is too small
for most anything, and client-server prepress built around QuarkXPress
is not the rule but the exception.
All after the spectro climbed onto the desktop following the mouse and
permanently changed the way we think and work : First we learnt to
design letters and arbitrary shapes in synthetic 2D geometry space
which is independent of any physical device space. We did this by
drawing with the mouse which, as John Warnock remarked is indeed like
drawing with a brick, but nonetheless efficient. Then we learnt to
design colors in synthetic 3D geometry space which again is independent
of any physical device space. We did this with the spectro which as
long as it did not exist prevented us from realizing the concept of
repurposing because it prevented us from having factual information
about device gamuts and device gamut behaviours. And without this
factual information we had no way of grasping how to realize the
concept of capturing, archiving and reproducing with no loss or with as
little loss as possible.
Just my ten cents.
