Surely, the "gifted" human eye knows a lot about color. If the purpose of
color reproduction is ultimately to produce matches agreable to the eye,
having an accepted "expert" eye in the calibration process does not seem
absurd. Whether a comparison-experiment can be set up without additional
hardware (eg. filters) that will work satisfactorily in ambient light is a
different matter. As for mechanical instruments that are not spectros, I
have heard it said that they are subject to a very real drift over time,
guaranteeing the user who trusts them over his own judgement bad results
after a few years. The above remarks should be taken as an indication of
my stupidity, my hating monday's, and my irritation at some imaginary
science being invoked in a "religious" sense.
