It was my hope that the OS X RIPs from Compatible Systems might contain
assorted graytone presets by the time they shipped, but that was a bit much
to expect. However, the channel control available with these RIPs means that
you can build any graytone that interests you (sepia, selenium,
platinum, etc) as well as neutral grays. By eliminating the yellow component,
and color balancing your grays only with Cc, Mm, and Kk components it is
possible to build very low metamerism results that avoid banding and
smoothness issues as well. GCR has rather a different meaning with the new 7
ink printers since there is a light black that is less grainy and offers
smoother gradients, but which is not dead neutral, requiring use of color
inks for tonal balance, in proportions that vary from media to media. These
RIPs are long awaited and excellent products that deserve much more time than
I have been able to give them with my recent schedule. Hope to do them more
justice over the next few months.
