I know that everyone scans negs. but am having trouble finding a really

Scanner operators for the most part never have liked working with negatives,
it's too bad since there are things you can do with negs that are impossible
with chromes, however I'm sure there are some around that are skilled in the
neg area (one would hope).
I don't know the current NYC scan scene but if this is going to be an
ongoing need and you don't find an immediate solution I have some thoughts.
The only way I found to solve this problem (before I bought a good scanner
and did it myself) was to get 16 bit raw scans and tweak them myelf in
photoshop. I still had problems with certain negs and in hindsight, I would
have contacted Lasersoft for a referal to a service bureau with a silverfast
driven drum scanner. Then I would have had the raw scans done in HDR format
and process them on my own computer with Silverfast HDR ($300 at
silverfast.com). Silverfast is a great tool for working with scans from
negatives, you can make and save your own profiles for a multitude of
filmstocks, color temps, exposures etc., and you have all the controls that
the scanner operator has. This approach gives you the advantages of having
your own drum scanner without the investment in $ and hassels of ownership.
