Then I would have had the raw scans done in HDR format
and process them on my own computer with Silverfast HDR ($300 at
silverfast.com). Silverfast is a great tool for working with scans from
negatives, you can make and save your own profiles for a multitude of
filmstocks, color temps, exposures etc., and you have all the controls that
the scanner operator has. This approach gives you the advantages of having
your own drum scanner without the investment in $ and hassels of ownership.

Dear Rob
I presume your thoughts above are on the assumption that capture will be
on a drum scanner? I would just add a word of caution ....not all drum
scanners are operated at their full potential. Often one will see
faults in drum scans caused by poor scanner serviceability and the
failure of the operator to be aware of problems. A well profiled drum
scanner operated correctly will produce awesome scans.
Cheers
Richard
