Could you expand on the "taming" of the 7700? We're considering

You must buy the optional Phasermatch ICC software (I think it's
around 5 or $600) to start. Then if you want to run the Phasermatch
calibration procedure, you can, but it's extremely basic and I am
wary much good would come of it. It would appear that you could use
profiles you created yourself with a spectro instead of theirs, but
no, that isn't the case. Not unless you can trick the software into
accepting your profile (contact me off-list if you need to do this).
Once you get past all of this, the Phasermatch software makes a
profile similar to a device-link profile and modifies the Laserwriter
driver to allow selecting it while printing.
Doing the color management through a color server would bypass all
this voodoo, but most clients don't want to pay for a color server
after busting their wallets on the 7700. Using Praxisoft's ICC
Autoflow Desktop might be a reasonable solution although it requires
an extra step of saving and converting a postscript file.
And to the person asking whether to profile CMYK or RGB, definitely CMYK.
