what other DTP application can you say support grayscale management? has
anyone out there put together or seen a functioning, device independent
workflow for gray scale "color" management that they would be willing to
share?
I'm not sure if this meets your needs, but it indicates that the door is
begining to open to a managed grey scale workflow. Here is a quote fom Jon
Cone re: his new grayscale ICC profiling system. It sounds like it will be
a big improvement over custom greyscale dot gain curves.
The new PiezographyBW does not use any proprietary printer drivers, software,
or file formats.
The new PiezographyBW is ICC compliant and works with any software which can
open and print a grayscale image. We have invented a new type of (industry
standard) ICC printer profiling application that allows us to produce ICC
printer profiles which are specifically oriented to monochromatic inks and
the standard OEM printer driver. The profiles take into consideration the
individual selection of ink dilutions for appropriate image density, the
crossover of inks from one dilution into the other, and directly addresses
the dithering patterns of
the OEM driver. The profiles besides delivering 256 levels of gray
linearization between dMin and dMax allow the following enhancements to our
process: The profiles preview correctly in Photoshop so that the user can
see the actual color of the inks, paper, black point, and correct tonal
range on their monitors when Photoshop's soft-proof is selected.
PiezographyBW is now riding on the manufacturers unpublished dithering
patterns rather than using a third-party dithering pattern which could be
problematical on some printers.
