inexpensive monitor calibration and profile calibration

Does anyone have any suggestions that I can pass on to my photo students regarding monitor calibration software/hardware that was not as expensive as EyeOne or the Colorvision Spyder that I use? Most don't have the funds yet to spend for that level of perfection, but need something better than trial and error to make their assignments from inkjet printers look better.

Also, any low end paper/inkset/printer profiling solutions that might be worth anything?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks
