First, you had mentioned that the 10000 might be a pigment unit. In that
case I would all together pass. There is just too much that you can't
print, and as a contract proofer it would probably be considered
unacceptable by most.
The Ultrachromes are fine, I like the inkset and think that a fine art
or photographic user running dyes is crazy. While the Ultrachromes have
better stability, the whole matching black issue may be a real problem.
The Ultrachrome black just doesn't have the density, and as a contract
proofer usually "in the ballpark" isn't close enough.
You cannot switch inksets regardless of the printers. People that try to
do this are usually met with problems, and Epson will not help. When you
install the first set of carts, the firmware on these printers is
programmed forever. Roland might be a better choice for this kind of
versatility.
As for profiling, I don't exclusively use Monaco. In fact I only use it
internally because of the licensing restrictions. PMP is more flexible,
and although I really like the Monaco interface, I've been aggravated by
the fact that I have to edit every profile RGB profile I make with
ImagePrint because of the scum dot. The CMYK profiles I've made with
Monaco and Postershop 5.5 are fantastic though, to me they are better
(CMYK) than what I get from PMP4.1.1 as of right now.
I've profiled more pigmented printers than anything else, but that is
because of the kind of users I deal with are using.
A whole lot about how successful you will be depends on the RIP. With
the Epson driver you are trying to correct the pretty nasty raw behavior
of the printer with a poor little profile. Onyx, Bestcolor, Colorbyte,
Ergosoft all can get the printer into a much better state to profile
over. So part of your success in this operation will rely on the RIP and
color management software you choose.
