We are looking at adding a new printer for our fine art reproduction work,
having used a Roland FJ52 for the last 4 years. Trying to pick between the
FJ600 eight color, or the 9600. Any comments on the comparison of the
potential gamuts of the two? I'm leaning towards the 9600 for a number of
reasons, but would love to hear from anyone with knowledge of the two.
Hope this doesn't sound too much like an Epson slam but consider this:
Who has the most user lists based on resolving printer issues? The
sheer volume of Epson lists should tell you something.
How many times in the last four years have Epson/Roland changed their
printers, inks, and support?
IMHO the only real changes (besides firmware and network additions,
software) Roland has made over three generations of printers is to
upgrade the printhead and feed systems. I consider this a plus. If
you are stepping from the FJ50 series to the FJ500/600 (X3 variable
drop technology heads) you are going to see pretty much the same
print resolution quality jump as the 9600. The Epson UC inks outpop
the Roland Toyo (UVpigment) but then again the Roland inks don't
change from year to year. They have their issues - but longevity
isn't one of them.
Personally I think the 9600 UC is a pretty good buy for the price.
Professionally I stick with the Rolands and it appears as if many of
the big fine art producers (www.harvestproductions.com, etc) who use
and have used Iris printers for the last ten or so years appear to be
moving over to Rolands as well. The real trick is to get your hands
on the Technical Service manuals (not impossible). For the Roland
this translates into cost effective maintenance which offsets the
principal cost difference and helps you to resolve banding issues - a
hardware and media reality with Rolands, HPs, Epsons, etc. For the
Epson this translates into having something to fall back on once
Epson introduces a new line and drops support for your one or two
year old printer.
Support in your region is also a key issue. For us we initially chose
Roland because they looked like the easiest of all the available
(relatively unsupported) printers to work on. Combined with a
ColorSavvy CM2s (linearize), and EyeOne w/Publish or PMPro
(characterize) and I think we made the right choice. Even simply
using the out-of-the-box ColorChoice RIP (v4). The nice thing is
Roland support has actually even improved over the years in our area
and from Roland itself.
