Is a package of less than $ 300 able to do professional monitor calibration
for both CRT and LCD screens, like the new Eye One package?

The calibration and profiles I'm seeing with the EyeOne display are right on
par with the older, $600 EyeOne Spectrophotometer at least to the displays
I've tested.

I should have pointed out that the only software the EyeOne Display
currently works with is EyeOne Match 2.0. That being the case, the ONLY
other instrument I can make direct comparisons with is either the $600
EyeOne display (older) or the $1500 EyeOne Pro. The latter two as far as a
display is concerned are identical. So I have no way to test the EyeOne
Display (the $249 jober) to any other instruments or software. Still, I
think the newer unit is doing what it needs to do at least in direct
comparison to it's older more expensive brother.

Since Eye-One Display is a Sequel instrument (or basICColor SQUID) in disguise, a lot of other software should work with it without any problems. And through other software, e.g. basICColor display, you can compare it with a number of other instruments.
We found it (basICColorSQUID) to be an excellent instrument - for a colorimeter. But the Eye-One Monitor, being a full blown spectro, is still the superior instrument. This will be visible, when trying to match monitors of different types and makes. And ... the Eye-One Monitor is the only instrument that (in combination with ICS4s Remote Director) is SWOP certified.
GretagMacbeth discontinued the Eye-One Monitor, but it is still available from Color Solutions.
BTW, the "younger brother" ist just a stepbrother ;-)
