Hoping someone can clarify which setting they would recommend

Automatic or Apple CMM ?
In OS X there's only one system-level CMM (Apple) so it doesn't matter.
Setting this to "Automatic" is not "functionally equivalent to random".
"Automatic" was a minor issue on OS 9 and earlier because you could have
multiple CMMs installed and the Automatic setting meant that the CMM
specified as the default in the profile was used if it was available.
Spec'ing a CMM meant that was the one used for everything.
I only know of one application that even looks at the ColorSync settings
(Nikon Capture Editor). There must be more. Adobe blows it off unless you
pick "ColorSync" in the color setup.
Adobe ACE is only available to Adobe applications. Maybe someday Adobe will
un-bundle it so other apps and the OS can use it, but not today.
