Dear All
Good question! I guess the short answer is that in nearly all cases the
client wants to see a proof prior to printing and with solutions like our
ProvaROOM this is now very economic.
For the past five years or so we at Centurfax www.centurfax.co.uk have been
obsessed with
dots, so we like to think that we know a thing or two about them. With our
focus now very much on economic proofing solutions, we find ourselves once
again entering a debate about dots.
Several players providing software to the colour proofing market are
suggesting that the user can proof using real halftone dots. We are
convinced that this is just a smokescreen. If you have to proof with real
halftone dots and real rosettes, as they actually appear on the press, it
is likely to cost you around GBP100k for the right equipment. For everyone
else there is the software and inkjet printer solution.
Any confusion around this issue is quite frankly unnecessary. Yes, there
are mid-priced software solutions that claim to simulate the halftone
dots. However, in our experience, the dot is not truly representative of
that which will appear on the plate or the press sheet, and its creation
can completely upset the final colour, which surely renders the whole
process rather a waste of time, money and effort.
Printers must ask themselves what they really want to achieve. Their
customers want to get a very good impression of how the final job with
look and expects to see pictures in the colours that they will be printed,
and text, tints, and line-art in position and correct in terms of their
visual appearance. In truth, ninety-five per cent of customers wouldnt
appreciate a rosette if they saw one, so why try to illustrate the
mechanics of the printing process by making pseudo-rosettes on an inkjet?
In the purchase of any piece of equipment we are all basically looking at
three issues price, quality and performance. For the price paid,
proofing software RIPs linked to a standard inkjet printer represent
excellent value for money, because they offer unrivalled quality and
performance on a pound-for-pound basis. If you have unrealistic
expectations regarding the quality, however, you might be disappointed,
and might have to dig significantly deeper into your pockets to be
completely satisfied.
If you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
