Andrew,
I think what he really meant was do build a camera profile based on a
spectral characterization of the camera sensor using a monochromator, which I will do
for him one of these days. Its the only way I know of that produces a decent
camera profile. Then you really can get at the scene colorimetry (and
appearance ultimately), which would make a good start for performing the kind of
rendering he does. Not something I would recommend for most workflows, but for his
it does make some sense. Getting the scene spectral data is a great idea but
requires a multispectral camera, which is rather a bit overkill for most
applications.

Steven feels that the only way to really produce
a good profile is to get the spectral data from the scene and have some
really good ideas about the way the individual chips respond (at least
that's what I think I understood about his point).

Yeah, I see the same thing. I have yet to create a robust profile from a
target. The primary reasons why this is so (add them to your list): observer
metamerism, illuminant metamerism, target gamut limitation, and the differences
between color and appearance reproduction.

I've seen some custom profiles do amazing jobs and
then produce awful results using the same software and target so unless the
phase of the moon is key, I can't figure out why it's as iffy as it is.
