Your set up sounds fine already.
You might want to check into Joe Holmes Ektaspace profiles that can be a
perfect match to film meanwhile offer a neutral grey balance.
Where the neutral rgb workspace profile is necessary is for doing things
like balancing grey and or white points. I've found scanner profiles best
used as production input profiles. A neutral working space though is really
needed to balance the image. IF you try to click on the white point
eyedropper preset to 5-2-2 CMY you'll notice leaps and jumps on images in
scanner space whereas in a neutral space things work as expected.
If you're adding spot colors or created colors that are outside of the
working space then you'll have to change to something bigger. Certainly in
the case of Ektaspace you'll already be producing all the color possible in
a transparency. Visually that's quite pleasing and natural. Printers that
reproduce colors outside this can indeed make impressive Pantone colorbooks
but those colors are not seen in natural images often.
Therefore the printer profiles can be used to represent the color repro
available to the printer without need to worry about working space profile.
