I found your comments interesting, because I have had to give up using

I still use it for the initial work on images, because the screen is so
sharp and

easy to view in daylight. But for the final color matching I've
resorted to an Artisan. Nowhere near as nice to work with, but the

Last year, around August I think, ColorVision changed the firmware in
the Spyder and the difference in the way it calibrated LCDs was truly
dramatic. Prior to that I would have to agree that LCD calibration was
certainly not up to the standard one had come to expect from a Spyder
and CRT. I am guessing your Spyder was pre the firmware update. If your
Spyder dates back to even earlier than last year, there was as well a
greater variation from unit to unit than is apparent in the units
manufactured in the last 18 months or so. I test every Spyder I sell to
clients and it is clear that the tolerances between units have been
tightened up in more recent times. My first Spyder had a tendency to
calibrate a little on the magenta side but it now a long time and many
Spyders later that I have had any call for complaint.
Only the week before last I calibrated a Formac 20" for a client and
took the opportunity to test the unit calibrated with ProfileMaker
4.1.5, the latest Match version and OptiCal. ProfileMaker eliminated
itself because of the fault that shows up from time to time with PM4.1.5
on Macs, it changes back to the default profile when opening some
applications, PhotoShop for one. Match looked very good and despite also
being from GretagMacbeth didn't display the same fault. OptiCal also
handled the Formac very well with spot-on neutrals but also had extended
range in the blues. It also covered the client's press profile better
when analysed. I left the decision up to the client as to which solution
he wanted to buy and he went for Optical and the Spyder.
If at all possible, I would suggest you try to borrow a late model
Spyder and have another go on the Formac with it. If you already have
the OptiCal software then I am sure you will not be disappointed. While
I am sure you are getting excellent colour accuracy from your Artisan it
is a real shame not to be getting full value from your Formac. As you
say great to work with, nice and bright and the inherent sharpness of a
good LCD does make for accurate judgements when sharpening images.
