From my point of view this is not about prepress, but about the Mac
which used to be the page design platform of choice. One can do digital
video and web design, but those are not targets for color management.
Anything related to color management is related to publishing of pages.
IMHO it is not good advice to the photographer to tell her that she
does not need to buy into PDF as workflow platform, because if she does
not do so she will find herself cut out of the information loop through
which the value of her work is realized for the customer. A home user
does not need PostScript. An architect does not need PostScript. But in
the graphic arts we need PostScript in workflows where projects are
assembled at remote sites and in remote schedules.
Just my ten cents.
