Mike Chaney is providing the right printing tool for a lot of the
photographers. Qimage has to rely on the OEM drivers and that
means for Epson printers good dithering but less transparency in
inklimit settings etc. The quality + consistency of the latest
printers has increased a lot so linearising etc may not be as
important as it was. The popularity of Bill Atkinson's profiles
show that. There's a RIP like driver available for Qimage that
allows more control than the normal printer drivers:

Qimage doesn't have a Postscript interpreter. But it imports
digital camera files with the extensions, nests, enhaces them
etc. Mike's support is unbelievable. There are several RIPs
around that try to be a photographer's tool and some come near
like ImagePrint and StudioPrint but their respons to user
requests will always be slow compared to Mike's.
There's another development going on with Apple's Panther.
Postscript and Gimp-print incorporated. It looks like the CS
application range of Adobe may provide the right import
facilities. I don't think Photographer's RIPs are really needed
if they do not deliver what Qimage does or Macs soon will do.
Then there's the price ...
Ernst
