Well there lays the wolf. Since photographers are being brought into the
digital workflow as suppliers of source material the assurance that the
image file integrity is good what other way can one work without CM? If the
same finger pointing service bureau comes back and says the file is no good,
etc, etc, these days the average imagery at the source can be validated with
little expense with hardware such as the Spyder or i1 display, Optix, LACie
BlueEye, and a decent printer / proofing software combo. A good photographer
has to provide this guarantee for each and every job that is digital. It's
unfortunate that most the time the photographer/graphics artist is the small
guy or girl that is the weakest chain in the link to blame. It is fortunate
that CM has become largely affordable, reliable and REAL insurance against
these types of incidents and more importantly to be able to deliver quality
work that represent exactly what you want it to be.

I do know that if your image quality is correctly Color Managed, then your
work should be reproduced close to your intentions. If it's not then that's
a quality control problem somewhere down line such as the service bureau who
refuses to be open standard color controlled or worse press ops that are
obliged to correct for the service providers problems in correctly
controlled color.
