Interesting, I often find that high patch profiles are *less* smooth, if

inverse relationship there.
And I do agree, however, here are my findings. I advocate spending lots of
time on the linearization process. Most available linearization methods
don't yield a balanced CMY ramp measured in LCH. I have spent little and
lots of time making sure the CMY is properly balanced by tweaking the
linearization curve. Its tedious but worth the pain. Once the CMY is
balanced, I go onto profiling.
For that reason alone, I would suspect that the profile I build will yield
better transitions due to the fact that there will be less deltas between
patches, however, I am not sure (leave that up to the color scientists). I
was taught by David Piccus formerly of Color Solutions, the importance of a
good linearization before profiling. I have also read in many posts by you
all advocating the same. It's my mantra.
For what ever reason, its works for me. 1400 patches, SpectroScan, 16bit,
and a damn good linearization usually yields the smoothest gradients.
