I doubt there's infrared hardware/firmware in the scanner for

If it has been in scanner then Polaroid must have made use of
that hardware feature or Microtek if it is one of the scanners
that's actually made by Microtek.
Hmm... that logic is a bit shaky for my taste. If someone knows for
sure the intimate details of the SS 35+'s innards, my inquiring mind
would like to know. BTW, this particular scanner had no Microtek
equivalent, AFAIK.
Vuescan shows all those
features for all scanners but they just don't work if the
hardware isn't there.
Sorry, not true. Features are grayed out or do not appear when
scanner does not support them. That's what's supposed to happen, and
having hooked up several scanners to VueScan it appears to be this
way indeed.
Polaroid has a free dust and scratch
removal program that works independently. Not at ICE level
though.
I think I've already stated my opinion re. Polaroid software, which
I've unhappily used for many years. Besides, there is no Polaroid sw
that runs native in OSX or even in Classic mode AFAIK.
Monitor profile is possible too. But I use Prove It on the PC.
ProveIt is not OSX native AFAIK. I stopped using it therefore.
BasICColor Display has replaced it on my Mac.
The license of Vuescan Pro covers 4 copies running on different
systems, hundreds of scanner models, 3 operating systems and
support for a year which probably means 50 updates.
Actually Pro has unlimited upgrades.
That's not
what you get with Silverfast.
I don't follow this thought. But since Silverfast gets mentioned so
much on this list, I'll say this about it: when I last checked (over
a year ago), Silverfast supported the SS 35+ but not for high-bit
output. It was also much more expensive. I just checked their website
again and I can't find my scanner mentioned at all now. Prices for
other scanners now seem in line VueScan, however. But it's not an
alternative for me, since they dropped the ball on my scanner.
It was the high-bit capability and profiling abilities that got my
attention with VueScan mostly. I tested the former briefly, but could
not test the latter. If anyone has any experience with these aspects,
I'd still like to hear.
