Stephen,
In the old days before desktop publishing and commodity scanning, there were
different prices for color reproduction. Today that type of hierarchy still
exists. I am not saying you are going to get $500 per scan, but if you look
around there are a number of businesses getting paid well to create high
quality color reproductions. Of course there are a lot of other companies
that create lower cost reproductions also.
As for the flaming designer. Its real simple...you cant have it both ways.
If you want high quality color then you got to play by the rules of having
neutral gray viewing, curtain on windows, proper lighting and use some
common sense.
