Density reversals in gray ramp

Hi:

If I create a new 16-bit empty image in L*a*b* space, say 2" x 24", draw a black gradient across it, and then soft proof it with my custom CMYK profile (all in Photoshop CS), the gray ramp looks pretty good.

If I do the same process as above of creating the empty image and applying the gradient, only start with my color space as, say, ProPhotoRGB instead of L*a*b* space and do the soft proof with the same CMYK profile, I get gradient reversals in the last third of the gray ramp.

If I take the same ProPhotoRGB gradient image as mentioned above, and convert it into L*a*b* space, and then soft proof it with my custom CMYK profile, although it doesn't look exactly the same as in my first example when I started in L*a*b* space, I don't see the reversals.

Any idea what's going on?

Thanks,

Jim
