I was asking if there is a difference in the end result of applying a profile in a filter vs applying at the "device" as defined in the ColorSync Utility.

The filter gives you more control. For example, in the "Color" section of the filter info window notice the checkbox "Object: All objects". Unchecking that enables the popup to the right with values text, graphics, images, and shading. You can set a different profile for each of these, so all the text could be matched to one profile, all the images to another, etc. You can also specify an intermediate transform (from source through a profile onto another profile). It's still the same matching mechanism though, the filter uses ColorSync to match data, so in that respect it's the same as any other matching you're used to.
