Thank you very much for your responses, thiey are helpful, I hadnt
realised that the repositioning of values and colours was being done by
design and not in response to specific data. If I have properly understood
relative colorimetric rendering intent is giving me an unaltered
transcription of printable data from one space to the other where as
perceptive is modulating the data to fit into the smaller dynamic range
whether the colours are outside that range or not.
This revelation leads me to another question. Converting a zone scale in
lab values to a wide range RVB printer profile in perceptive produces
identical lab values all the way up the scale. Converting the same file
using relative produces a sharp cliff and a large stagnant pond. Analysing
the data shows that the relative conversion has removed several values and
either not replaced them ( cliff) or replaced them with a single value (
stagnant pond). It is obvious that the printer profile table includes RVB
values for each of the missing L* values , which is why the colours are not
out of gamut, and why the printer is able to print them. It is hard to
believe that the profile look up table has assigned all neutral signals from
RVB 28, 28,28 to RVB 49,49,49 the single Lab value 21, 1, 4. Why hasnt
the relative rendering intent simply printed them as they appear in the
profile look up table, or has it ?
Thank you
John
