I was stumped too. I built profiles on top of the ColorSmart setting
and they worked quite well, so I'm tempted to conclude that the Smart
in ColorSmart doesn't extend to doing differerent things depending on
the source image. Hence it's at least a stable condition on which to
profile.
The profiles did improve the output...
