Photo Black on Somerset Velvet will yield rather weak results. Not only is
the matte black a much better choice on fine art media, but frankly Epson
Somerset Velvet is a disappointment compared to what else is out there. If
you ran the matte black ink on a paper like Hahnemule William Turner 310gsm
you would see a tremendous difference against what you are running now. You
should be able to hit 1.8dmax as opposed to about the 1.55 you are getting
now. This is a huge difference and the Hahnemule paper holds greater detail
but has a distinct texture as well. No optical brighteners either. If you
are looking for a RIP to get the photo black/Epson Somereset velvet combo
looking better it is likely a waste of time. The only downside to this is
that you should probably be using the photo black cart for all of the other
type of output you describe. You should still look at a RIP though as I
can't imagine driving a production printer through Photoshop.
