Well it is one RIP that I haven't actually tried yet, but I just downloaded
the demo to try it out. The biggest thing I'd look for would be the
dithering, so many RIPs are quite ragged compared to the Epson driver and if
you are going to be working more with a fine art workflow not all RIPs are
equal. At least the good news is that you can demo them for free, for OSX
you should try Colorburst and ImagePrint. Beware that if you move off
Proofmaster and you have the ICColor Spectro that you will likely need also
purchase something like ProfileMaker Pro or Monaco Profiler (budget another
$3000+). Not every RIP has built in ability to create output profiles, and
you could make a strong argument that the RIPs that include profiling
capabilities are outperformed by stand alone profilers anyway.
One example setup would be an OSX Panther box (at least dual 1ghz G4, 1.5GB
RAM), 10600 UC, Firewire connection, ICColor, Profilemaker Pro 4.1.5,
ImagePrint 5.6, and the right paper and ink combo as I mentioned before.
With the William Turner paper and matte black ink this is a killer combo,
although the 9600 UC has a better gray balance no matter how you cut it.
I've run this combo (sometimes with 10000CF or 9600's) and set up other
studios with great sucess. If you also have the new EyeOne all the better,
use PMP 4.1.5 to make profiles for custom light sources with the ambient
head attachment, and use it to calibrate and profile the display for more
accurate softproofing within the RIP application. It works real well, BUT
ImagePrint is probably its weakest at postscript files. Colorburst was also
pretty easy to setup but I only ran it on a 7600 for a few hours and didn't
throw any postscript at it, it has since seen some recent improvements from
what I'm told, a product worth trying out.
