Hi to all,
There are two parts to this inquiry (try not to be long) – the first concerning a problem I ran into with a new Sony Artisan and the second concerning gamma and Kelvin settings on an Artisan. First, while I was testing a new Artisan in making a decision on an upcoming purchase I found a problem: the test was to make the screen completely black (in Photoshop) then marquee a selection in the middle of the screen (copy/paste) and use the Curves dialog box to view subtle changes in black/gray movement. Basically, I made the lower left curve point (black/black) active and using the “up arrow” looked for changes in the middle of the screen. I read about this test from “Luminous Landscape” site. With a very good monitor there should be distinct changes with each movement upward but with THIS Artisan (new) I noticed changes only every 2 movements – this is equivalent to my horrible 17” Apple Studio!! What could be wrong? This leads to the next inquiry….
Secondly, I contacted a colleague of mine and found we have a gentleman’s disagreement on gamma and Kelvin settings. He suggested that the Artisan I ran this test on did not have the appropriate “contrast ratio” set – which might very well be the case but I would like members’ input on this. He runs his Sony Artisan (with G5 Mac) with a contrast ratio of 500:1, a gamma of 2.2 (he states that Artisan native is 2.3), and a Kelvin rating of 6500 for viewing in a 5500 Kelvin booth.
I thought that Mac/graphic users should set gamma to 1.8 and I believe the native contrast ratio of the Artisan is 400:1 (not sure). And should one not calibrate to the Kelvin rating of their viewing booth?? How does raising the contrast ration affect other factors? I know that with Piezography a Kelvin rating of 5000 is recommended (thought 6500 was mainly press printing)??
I know this is long but, while not a color expert, I would like info as to where I, or my colleague, might be off in the understanding of appropriate monitor settings/calibration.
Thank you,
Cody Thomas
