Speaking of black generation, I was using Link-O-Lator last week and I came
to wonder why CMYK Output profiles don't have an option for preserving 100%
black in the first place? Granted, there's no logical need for this in RGB
output profiles <!> but in CMYK profiles, I can see this is quite a
legitimate need. Couldn't this be handled by a less than dumb CMM? For
example, select 'Preserve 100% black' in a CMYK to CMYK conversion? Or
better yet, this could be handled by the Adobe Color Engine, at print time,
in InDesign color management tab: have an option to preserve 100% black
text. Unless it's already in there and I totally missed it...

For a "PressXYZ_CMYK" to "PressABC_CMYK", it would make sense to not only preserve 100% K but possibly the whole black channel with only a tone curve adjustment to accomodate the diff between the two presses. (Does Link-O-Lator let you preserve the ENTIRE black channel? I'll be seeing Eric in a couple of weeks so maybe I'll just ask HIM!)

For press proofing on an inkjet however, I almost NEVER recommend using the 100% K option because of not only differences in K density between press and inkjet, but because of differences in black HUE as well. Leaving this option off always seems to produce a better match.

At any rate, are there printing shops, today, that use device-links in
production other for large, multi-page PostScript or PDF jobs? Such as, in a
magazine work, to preserve 100% black? I just don't see its value in the
context of single process images.

I've yet to run into a shop in my travels that even knows what a device link is let alone actually using them in production. Same goes for linear vs. curved plates. The majority of places I go are not using curves at all but are printing "linear".

Terry
