It's certainly possible to preserve as much black as possible, and
still do a colorimetric conversion. Tools for creating such colormetric
(as opposed to merely curve adjustment) device CMYK->CMYK link profiles
are not common though. The usefulness for inkject devices is dubious,
given how sensitive most injets are to the level of black used.
