LCDs don't have gain amplifiers. All the light comes from the backlight. In most LCDs, the only control is over the brightness of the backlight-all other tweaks are done in the 8-bit LUTs of the video card. The ColorEdge is unique in having an internal 10-but LUT separate from the one on the video card, and that's what the controls tweak.
