Ott-lites have spikes too, both the CF and the spiral one. They are
fluorescents. See:

The color temperature of the Solux can be controlled by varying the operating
voltage. There is a calibration table that shows the color temperature vs.
supply voltage. The Solux should last well and be stable since they are
halogen.
For the halogen cycle to work, the bulbs need to be able to get hot and operate
at that temperature, which should be fine in their normal mounting and even
better when run slightly hotter. (Shorter life, but better halogen cycle). The
halogen cycle is what prevents the inside of the bulb from turning black as a
regular incandescent does.
