I need to bring a Nikon Coolscan 4000 into the color-management loop.
I currently use i1 Photo for output profiling and I'm very pleased with
it. With regards to profiling the Coolscan, I have several questions
that this brain trust can likely help me with. I'm scanning roughly
75% Velvia, 20% Provia, and 5% Kodachrome 64.
1. Profiling software. There's very little info available from Gretag
on the "Eye One Scanner Module" upgrade. Does anyone have any
experience with this package? Will it profile HCT targets as well as
IT8's? Other recommendations?
2. Targets. HCT vs. IT8? For IT8's, any preferred source? Several of
the sources I've seen say "Fuji" with no additional info. Is this
Provia, Velvia, or does it make a (big) difference? Can I use the
Velvia (Fuji) profile for Kodachrome? (I haven't seen Kodachrome
targets.)
3. Scanning software. Nikon Scan (3.1, with a new 4.0 not yet
installed) seems fine to run as "dumb scanner software" with later
assignment of the profile. I assume I can still use ICE etc. Any
reason to switch scanning software? I'll be using the bulk feeder, and
hope (!) to need little operator intervention in the scanning phase, as
long as the originals are similar. Reasonable?
4. Gamma optimization. (e.g.,
http://www.computer-darkroom.com/gamma/gamma_1.htm) Can this be done
(or should it be done) with the HCT targets?
Thanks in advance.
