The HCT Velvia target will work quite well in your scenario and better than
any of the alternatives. The Kodachromes will require more post work in
Photoshop as their dye set is unique, but in the absence of a Kodachrome
target, it's all one can do.
We've been using HCT targets with Gretag software for years on all our
scanners including a Nikon4000. We make a raw scan, assign the HCT profile,
then convert to our working space (DonRGB). Then we make adjustment layers
for levels and curves making adjustments as needed. Other layers might be
used for certain colors that didn't reproduce as desired (rare). That's
basically it. We've never had to change the workflow for original film types
or use any other target.
If you go this route, get one of the most recent HCT targets. They have less
flare than some of the earlier ones (esp. important in 35mm targets).
