I do not have any hard facts but from what I understand, it is calculated from
the three channels favoring the green one. About a month ago there was a post
on the D1scussion (D1 Nikon Cameras) regarding the suspected formula.

Also note that there is a similar function in Nikon Capture-4 when used in
tethered mode.
