If you're scanning the negative as a positive, just pretend it is a
transparency, and if you've profiled your scanner for transparencies, just
assign the scanner profile. (Remember, as always, to use exactly the same
scanner settings that you used to profile the scanner) Then simply convert
to your chosen RGB working space, invert and take out your Photoshop tools.
This is a perfectly legitimate way to scan negatives, with a few
reservations; bright reds often will tend towards the nuclear, and choosing
the correct black and white points can be totally subjective if there are no
suitable areas in your image. If your scanner interface is not suited to
scanning negatives, this is often the best way out, with the added bonus
that you don't risk destroying the highlight and shadow detail in the scan;
you can always go back in Photoshop and try again. Just remember to save the
raw scan.
