I believe two of Murphy's Laws apply to this thread:
"The only thing more accurate than incoming enemy fire is incoming
friendly fire."
and
"When there is a very long road upon which there is a one-way bridge
placed at random, and there are only two cars on that road, it follows
that: (1) the two cars are going in opposite directions, and (2) they
will always meet at the bridge."

Trust me. It's not funny. It's inflammatory.
I admit at the moment I'd prefer the sound of crickets...
If my neighbor had a tree overhanging my property and I wanted him to
cut it, I wouldn't start out with "You're an idiot, the way you arrange
your yard makes me want to puke. Could you cut that limb there?"
Chances are nothing after "you're an idiot" is going to get through,
and if it does, it won't get through in any helpful way.
...however, I refuse to indulge the notion that I said or implied
anyone was an idiot. Only through assumption, and an incorrect one,
could you reach that conclusion. Barney Fife is not a specific person
in my view, but rather an icon of the culture that has developed in
Apple where eye candy is more important than function. User interface
has taken a back seat in the Macintosh user experience. What 3rd party
vendor violates the human interface guidelines more often than Apple
does in its own applications?
Call me blunt if you wish but I do not accept the characterization that
I stated or implied anyone was an idiot.
If you're trying to portray yourself as a noble martyr who "the man" is
always trying to bring down, I just don't see it Chris.
Huh?
I'm serious. We welcome suggestions, criticisms, bugs found, that's
great. It's not impossible to express those in a civil manner.
And when someone has done that, on a number of occasions now you have
replied with flippant and sometimes condescending remarks loosely
implying the user is the problem, and their opinion can be dismissed. I
think silence would be a vastly superior response in comparison.
Users *do* find color management, and ColorSync complicated. Users *do*
often think they themselves are to blame, that they are not smart
enough because they can't figure it out. Non-standard terminology,
lacking documentation explaining how it works as well as the
non-standard terminology, and features that look like they work but
don't is an *aid* to the notion that color management does not work.
And as a response to this you "civily" propose that somehow I am
maliciously manipulating the dialog in order to get people to buy more
copies of Real World Color Management. If you had any idea how much our
per book royalty is, John, you would probably fall off your chair in
laughter at the absurdity of your assertion. Please make ColorSync
foolproof because I'd really rather not see RWCM get unnecessarily
larger explaining things that make no sense or look like they work but
don't.
Users are not infallible but right now I'm overwhelmingly on the side
of users because Mac OS X in general is not an example of good user
interface or experience, and in particular (since it's the name of this
list) the ColorSync Utility is not either. And notice what I'm *NOT*
saying. I'm NOT saying it's your fault, or anyone's fault on the
ColorSync Team. I'm not sticking blame on anyone and I'm not at all
implying this was done intentionally, or through some lack of will
power or skill. Honestly, I had not even considered those as
possibilities. I am totally disinterested in assigning blame.
But I absolutely question the Apple corporate decision to use end-users
as a public beta testing grounds, thrusting us things that flat out do
not work correctly or well while expecting feedback for a year until
the next version of the operating system is released, and expect us to
pay for it. And once we've paid yet another $129 entry fee we get to be
guinea pigs yet again with a whole new release and a whole new set of
bugs and silly design. It's a whole new level of cruelty!
My suggestions? Fix the current feature set before adding more. Better
testing and quality control before releasing the OS. Don't take things
people say personally.
