Posterisation in PM 4.1.5 profiles.

Can I trouble this list with an i1 question.

I have been making profiles (mostly on inkjets) using an i1 Pro (no UV) and Profile Maker 4.1.5.
I have just noticed a change in the quality of the profiles that I am creating that I can not explain. I have a profile I made on my lowly Epson 830U on Kodak Premium Picture paper that is near perfect. It has a very neutral balance and matches my preview nicely.

I have recently made profiles on a number of other printers (HP7960, HPDJ 120, HP5000, and the same epson with Ilford smooth glossy stock) and each seems to exhibit posterisation in the shadow regions. The most notable is the HP5000 with pigment inks on a matt art paper.

When I look at the profiles as applied to a granger rainbow image in PS7, my original profile for the 830U/kodak stock produces a clean gradation into the blacks in all the colour ranges.

The same printer with the Ilford stock produces a visible posterisation band in the blacks which is also visible in the prints.

I went back and measured the chart that I made the kodak profile with and it also produced a posterised image. It also exhibited a delta E of around 20 as compared to the first set of measurements made about 2 months ago! Could be aging of the print but I worry that there is something amiss with my instrument.

The i1 passes all it's diagnostics OK.

The original Kodak media profiles were made without spectral data, as was the new comparative profile.

My other profiles have been made with spectral data and correct for optical brighteners on.

This leads to a second question.
If PM4.5.1 automatically detects for brighteners and adjusts as required, is there any reason why you would turn this off, or not use spectral data.

Hope someone can help

Regards
Simon
