I don't either. You always end up with some processed RGB data. That being
the case, I've had reasonably good success using Adobe Camera RAW and
converting into ProPhoto RGB in which to build a profile. Note, I don't
think this is a useful exercise for most users for most cases. The resulting
profile works pretty well after assigning the profile after conversion but
in many cases, you'll be just fine and spend a lot less time just continuing
forward with the ProPhoto RGB tagged and processed image. I've also used
Adobe RGB 1998 with ACR but comparing the resulting camera profile using
both spaces, there's little surprise that the ProPhoto RGB generated profile
has a wider gamut.

Yes!!! Which again raises the question of the need or effectiveness of this
entire exercise. I'd suggest you could instead shoot a standard Macbeth 24
patch target for each scene as a visual reference, then use Bruce Fraser's
technique of setting up a custom "calibration" of Adobe Camera RAW for use
with these images and skip the entire profile dog and pony show. Bruce's
